Snowboarding has been around for many years. The date cannot be pin pointed exactly but they can safley say that snowboarding has been around since the early 50's. The first real snowboard hit the market in the 1960's in the form or Sherman Poppens Snurfer. It was said to be a cross between a piece of plywood and a skateboard deck. The rope attached to the front tip of the snurfer gave the rider some control, and the steel tacks poking through the upper deck held the rider's feet in place. Although the majority of people that snowboarded during the early and late 60's were greatly frowned upon by skiers. Many mountains in fact banned snowboarders from using the ski slopes, and lifts. In 1983, less than 10 percent of United States ski areas allowed Snowboarding. But by 1997, few resorts excluded it.
Snowboarding began to get its big break in the 70's and 80's. Many snowboarding pioneers such as; Dimitrije Milovich, an East Coast surfer, and Jake Burton, a carpentar(and now the owner of Burton Snowboards) began making designs and layouts for snowboards. And now snowboarding is one of the most known sports to many different people and countries all around the world.
